A clothesline full of Little Dresses for Africa

It has been awhile since I have featured any charity sewing projects.  In the past the OFS blog has made mention of many different causes that can use your sewing, knitting, or crocheting talents.  One of my favorites is Little Dresses for Africa; Little Dresses for Africa was started with the simple idea that every little girl deserves a dress.  People from several countries have pitched in to make this project a success.  Most of the dresses are pillowcase dresses, made with actual pillowcases, since this is a simple, quick, and easy way to make dresses.  You can also make dresses (including pillowcase dresses) for this project from cotton fabric.

There are numerous charity sewing organizations around the world. Many charities in the United States need homesewn items.  You can make items for nursing homes, our troops, the homeless, battered women, shut-ins and many other groups.   About.com periodically features a list of charities to sew for and of course a Google search will turn up many more.

You can also start your own sewing group to sew for a local hospital, community center, or faith group sponsored charity.  This can be an enjoyable way to give back to the community and to connect with fellow sewers and other crafters.  If you don’t sew, knit, or crochet, you can still participate with items such as no-sew fleece blankets, etc.

Fleece is a wonderful fabric for blankets and warm garments for charities.
