Railroaded fabric refers to a type of fabric pattern that runs perpendicular to the usual selvage edge, or the lengthwise grain of the fabric. Instead of the pattern running parallel to the selvage (up the roll), as is typical, it runs across the width of the fabric. This design is often used to create a more expansive visual effect, making the pattern appear broader and less interrupted by seams. Railroaded fabric is popular in applications like upholstery, and will typically not work for drapery if requiring more than one panel.
