How to Make an Infinity Dress

This infinity dress is versatile and can be worn many ways. The one I’m going to make is a size medium. Spandex or jersey knit work best because of its stretch. You can wear this dress all year round depending on how you style it. It’s also super comfy!

Step 1: Cut out the pattern pieces

Fold the fabric over just enough so that the skirt pattern piece fits evenly. Make sure the “on fold” side is lined up to the fold line. Pin around the pattern and cut. Do the same for the second skirt piece.

Fold the fabric over about 12 inches. Measure and cut a 10 inch by 72 inch rectangle. After cutting, you should have two 10 inch by 72 inch rectangles. Lastly, fold the fabric over again and cut 2 waistbands using the waistband pattern piece.

Step 2: Pleat & sew the skirt

Make three 1 and 1/2 inch pleats on the front and back of the skirt. The pleats should be folded towards the center of the skirt. For the middle pleat, you can fold it to either side. The pleats should be evenly spaced about 4 to 4 and 1/2 inches apart. To keep them in place, stitch across the top with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Line up the sides of the skirt with the right sides facing each other and pin. If you cannot determine a right side of the fabric like this spandex I’m using, then you can use either side. Stitch the sides with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Back stitch at the beginning and the end and fold to the right side.

Step 3: Attach the waistband and straps

Take one waistband piece and starting from one of the side seams pin along the top of the skirt until you’ve reached the end. If your fabric has a right side, the right sides should be facing together. Starting a 1/2 inch in, stitch with a 1/2 inch seam allowance, and leave a 1/2 inch open at the end. Then, pin and stitch the side of the waistband with a 1/2 inch seam allowance and fold up. Take one strap piece and line the width of the rectangle up to the side seam. Pin to the top of the waistband with the right sides facing each other. Do the same for the second strap on the other side.

Then, pin and stitch the side of the waistband with a 1/2 inch seam allowance and fold up. Take one strap piece and line the width of the rectangle up to the side seam. Pin to the top of the waistband with the right sides facing each other. Do the same for the second strap on the other side. Make sure it overlaps the first strap by an inch. Stitch with a 1/4 inch seam allowance across the top. Take the second waistband piece and pin around the waistband and over the straps. Make sure the straps are facing down. Starting a 1/2 inch in, stitch with a 1/2 inch seam allowance and leave a 1/2 inch open at the end. Then, pin and stitch the sides with a 1/2 inch seam allowance and fold to the inside. Fold the edge of the inside waistband over a 1/2 inch and pin to the inside seam. Then stitch with an 1/8th of an inch seam allowance. Back stitch at the beginning and the end, and the infinity dress is now complete.
