How to Make No Sew Felt Flowers

Felt is an ideal fabric for making fabric flowers because it doesn’t fray and it’s thick enough to create volume and shape.  These felt flowers make great broaches, bouquets, or embellishments for headbands, bags, pillows, wreaths, and much more.  You can experiment with different variations, like color, size, and petal shape, to make them your own.

Instructions

Step 1: Make petal templates

If you don’t want to do any measuring, we have a template for you! Sign up to our mailing list to download the PDF template.

First, I’m going to make templates for 3 sizes of petals. Cut out 1 ½, 1 ¼, and 1 inch squares. (Metric: 3.8, 3, and 2.5 centimeters)

For the largest size, pick a corner and measure 5/8” (1.6 cm) on both sides. Connect the marks.

Do the same for the medium square, measuring ½” (1.3cm) from the corner. And finally measure 3/8” (1 cm) for the smallest square.

Use a coin or spool of thread to round off the corners on both sides of the line.  This creates a petal shape. Cut out the petal templates.

Step 2: Cut out the petals

I’m using 3 different shades of felt for the petals. Place the largest petal on the darkest shade of felt and cut around it.

Make 8 petals from each size template.

Step 3: Glue the petals

Next, fold in the sides of the petals in so that they meet at the bottom. Place a dab of hot glue under the edges to hold them in place.

Repeat this for all the petals.

Step 4: Glue the flower together

Cut out a circle of felt that’s about 2” (5 cm) across. Place the largest petals around the circle so that they are evenly spaced. Glue down each one.

Then create a smaller ring with the medium petals so they’re staggered between the large petals and glue them in place.

Repeat for the small petals.

Step 5: Make the flower center

To make the center of the flower, take the felt color used for the small petals and cut out a strip that’s about 4” (10 cm) long and ¾” (2 cm) wide.

Cut another strip the same size of the lightest color.

Fold the strips in half and make small snips down the edge.

Using the light colored strip, make a spiral, gluing as you go until it’s about ¾” (2 cm) wide.

Then take the other color, wrap it around once, and glue.

Glue this piece to the center and the flower’s done!
