When first created, ballistic nylon was used to fashion flak jackets for WWII pilots. Though it has since been replaced with more effect materials, it is still widely used, mostly for industrial purposes. The original specifications for ballistic nylon were for a 1050 denier, which refers to the weight of the nylon, but more varieties soon came into being. Because it is lighter and easier to form, this 840 Denier Coated Ballistic Nylon is easier to work with and lends itself to less intimidating projects, such as luggage, backpack bottoms, or motorcycle jackets. Ballistic nylon has a shiny right side and a duller sheen to the opposite side, which also has a more textured surface.
