How to Make a Scrap Fabric Pillow

With leftover scraps of fabric you can create this fun, decorative throw pillow. No machine is required, just hand stitching. You can stitch the shapes closer together or farther apart depending on how full you want the pillow to look. It’s a great way to use up those leftover scraps of fabric and re-use them. Samples of fabric will also work too.

Step 1: Cut out the circles
First, use the rounded object to draw circles on the fabric. I’m cutting circles that are 3 and 1/2 inches in diameter. Cut enough circles to cover both sides of the pillow. For these sized circles on an 18 by 18 inch pillow, you will need about 225 to 250 circles depending on how full you would like it to look. The number of circles will be determined by the size of the pillow and the size of the circles you’re cutting. It’s best to cut a number of circles as you go to help give you an idea of how full you would like it to be. If you don’t want the edges to fray, felt and fleece are good alternatives.
Step 2: Sew the circles to the pillow
Layer two circles on top of each other and pin them to the pillow. Continue to do this until the pillow is full by overlapping the circles. Alternate the designs and colors in any fashion you like. Once they’re all pinned, hand stitch in the center a few times to keep in place. Make sure you sew through both circles. Continue this until the pillow is completely covered. Once all the circles are sewn on, tack them together to fill in the gaps. The decorative throw pillow is now finished.
