How to Make Reusable Dish Covers

Looking to cut down on waste? These baking dish and bowl covers are great for storing food in the fridge and they’re washable so they can be reused.

Also, if you use 100% cotton thread and cloth materials (instead of vinyl) these dish covers can be microwavable.

Instructions

Step 1: Cut out the fabric

Cut out two identical pieces of fabric and vinyl by placing one on top of the other. The best way to measure out your pieces is to put the dish face down on the fabric and trace a line around the dish that is 2 inches out from its edge. This will leave enough room for the seam allowance and also the elastic channel.

Step 2: Sew

Clip the fabric and the vinyl with the right sides facing, sew around the edges of the two pieces of cover with a quarter inch seam allowance. Leave a 3″ opening so you can turn it right side out.

Trim the edges close to the seam and turn the cover right side out. Sew around the entire edge again, this time ½ inch away from the outer edge. Leave the opening unsewn for now.

Step 3: Cut the elastic

Wrap the elastic snuggly around wherever it will sit on your dish and cut it to that length.

Step 4: Add Elastic

Using a safety pin, string the elastic through the pocket you have sewn around the edge of your cover. Make sure that the other end stays outside of the fabric. Sew the ends of the elastic together.

Step 5: Sew

Sew the opening closed, being careful not to sew the elastic inside.
