How to Use a Rotary Cutter

Rotary cutters are made to cut fabric, paper, leather, vinyl, mat board, and foam core.

They are sometimes preferred over scissors when you need a straight, clean, precise cut, making them a favorite of quilters.

We offer Omnigrid rotary cutters in 2 sizes and also carry replacement blades. The smaller 28mm size is best for curves and provides the most precision.

You’ll also need a cutting mat to protect the surface you’re working on. We love using clear rulers with rotary cutters.

Instructions

Unlock the blade

To use a rotary cutter, first unlock it. This one has the choice of light or heavy use depending on the thickness of the material you’re cutting.

Press down on the material

Press down firmly on the material and roll the cutter, maintaining pressure.

You can use a straight edge or quilting ruler to ensure that your cuts are straight. Use a cutting mat to protect your work surface.

To be safe, push the rotary cutter away from you and make sure your fingers are out of the way when holding a ruler. The blade is sharp!

Lock the blade when finished

Make sure to lock the rotary cutter when you’re done.
