How to Sew an Easy Baby Blanket

Baby blankets are great for beginner sewers and make awesome gifts. This baby blanket has two sides with a fold over border, and is super soft thanks to the Minky fabric.  I chose neutral colors for either a boy or girl but you can use any cotton print or minky you like!

See our Minky Fabric Product Guide for more information about working with Minky.

Instructions

Step 1: Measure & cut the fabric

Make sure to pre-wash the fabric, especially the cotton.

Measure a 36″ x 36″ square out of the cotton and Minky fabrics. Make sure you’re measuring on the wrong side of the fabric, and cut out both squares.

Step 2: Pin & stitch the fabric

If you want mitered corners instead, check out our How To Sew a Mitered Corner tutorial. This technique works great on this baby blanket!

Place the Minky fabric on the table with the wrong side facing up. Take the cotton and place it in the center with the right side facing up. Fold the edges over 1″ twice on all four sides and pin.

For the corners, snip the extra fabric off at an angle before folding.

Starting at any corner, stitch with a 1/4″ seam allowance along the edge. Back stitch at the beginning and the end.

Stitch along the outside edges of the corners to keep them down, and it’s done!
